Spain's housing sales increase by 16.8 pct in July

MADRID, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Spanish housing sales rose by 16.8 percent in July when compared with the same month of a year earlier, Spain's Statistical Office (INE) reported on Monday.

A total of 38,841 operations were registered in the seventh month of the year, with sales of second-hand houses rising by 17.7 percent in July year-on-year to a total of 32,049 and sales of new houses increasing by 12.5 percent to a total of 6,792 purchases.

In July, 90.4 percent of the total number of purchases belonged to non-subsidized houses, whose sales rose by 18 percent in July year-on-year to 35,124 purchases. Sales of subsidized houses rose by 6.8 percent in July year-on-year to 3,717, accounting for 9.6 percent of the total.

Spain's housing sales have been rising for three consecutive months in a row on a year-on-year basis, after having fallen in April year-on-year.

The INE also reported that housing sales fell by 12 percent from June to July, with sales of new houses falling by 14 percent and those of second-hand houses dropping by 11.6 percent.

Purchases of non-subsidized houses fell by 11.4 percent from June to July and those of subsidized houses dropped by 17.6 percent.
